New Year’s Resolution Ideas & Balance in 2014 {Friday Features #8}

3 January, 2014 by Giselle Rochford 13 Comments

Hey There Friends! How’s it goin?

Today I’ve decided to do a return of the Friday Features!! ๐Ÿ˜€

I’ve been seeing New Year’s Resolution type posts popping up all over the blogsphere this week and I was feeling a little down cuz I hadn’t made any real goals or even had any New Year’s Resolution ideas yet ๐Ÿ˜•

But I started reflecting on the last year and thinking about what I’d want to change, improve, redo or get rid of this year and one word kept coming up: BALANCE

Last year, especially in the fall, my life was all over the place. Don’t get me wrong.  I was super productive. I experienced amazing new things. I accomplished more than I ever thought I would. I was happy. I was healthy. I was fit.

But it was CHAOTIC.

I recently found out about One Word 365 and I fell in love with the one word new year’s resolution idea. Focusing on only one word doesn’t mean that I can’t have other goals. It just means that every goal I have, every action I consider, every decision I make, will be working towards one master goal of living a more balanced life.

How awesome is that?!?!

new year's resolution idea balance

I want need more BALANCE in my life

So this year I’m expending all my energy on my one word resolution and trying to bring more balance to every aspect of my life. I’ll keep you updated along the way! ๐Ÿ™‚

Other One Word New Year’s Resolution Ideas:

Carla’s new year’s resolution idea was to make 2014 all about FOCUS:

“Iโ€™m Real Into a lot of things but where is my focus? Where is my heart? How will I use that to be a better me…This year when I make decisions I want to make them with purpose and focus. I want to think about why Iโ€™m doing it.

via Carla @ Real Into

Amanda’s new year’s resolution idea is to find PEACE in 2014:

“For me Peace is feeling centered and calm, itโ€™s about not overthinking and knowing that where I am is perfect. Patience is not one of my finer qualities and I know that focusing on peace will help me remember that everything unfolds in itโ€™s own time and in the right time.

via Amanda @ Run to the Finish

Emily’s new year’s resolution idea is to learn to be FEARLESS:

“Every year I make goals and intentions for myself and my family. I chart them out, I make vision boards, and I take action. Honestly, theyโ€™re always totally doable. Want even more honesty? I never believe Iโ€™ll actually achieve those goals (and then I stop trying)…2014 is going to be about…Fearless belief in myself, no matter what goal or what life throws at me.

via Emily @ Fit and Free with Emily

I know that not everyone will be a fan of the one word new year’s resolution idea, so here are some alternatives for those of you looking to make killer new year’s resolutions that will stay with you throughout the year!

More New Year’s Resolution Ideas:

Here’s a smorgasbord of tips for keeping your new year’s resolutions via Gretchen @ The Happiness Project

“Keeping resolutions (also known as making habits) is a key to happiness. If you want to make a positive change in your life, you need to figure out what to resolve, and how to keep that resolution.

Try using the two column sheet approach to setting new year’s resolutions like Kayla @ Variety by Vashti

“Something I like to do is scribble my thoughts on a two column sheet.  One side is for the year past and the other side is for the new year. It feels so good to think about the past year and reflect.

Read these tips for keeping your health & fitness related goals via Savannah @ Muffin Topless

“Believe it or not, simply making new DECISIONS is tiring in itself, let alone breaking out of your comfort zone and eat well and exercising!

Use the SMART goals model to set your new year’s resolutions like Carly @ Fine Fit Day

“Even if you are one of those people who eschews New Yearโ€™s Resolutions, hear me out:  You have already set your resolutions. Itโ€™s true. If you have made ANY plans for 2014, then guess what? Theyโ€™re your resolutions.

 What about you?

Did you make any resolutions this year?

2013 was a great blogging year for me. Not talking about stats or making money blogging but the connections and the meaningful friendships made. However, I did not realize that it was taking up too much time. With a job to keep and family to take care of, the only I could keep up was to sleep less. So this year I will try to find that balance in a way that I will be able to work productively, blog, support my bloggy friends, and spend quality time with family without abusing my health. I will make my blog calendar thid weekend, hopefully that will help!

I know exactly what you’re talking about! I can get so lost in writing or caught up in reading and commenting on other blogs, joining twitter chats and all the other stuff you find in the blogging world that all the stuff that I have to do in the REAL world just kind of fall to the wayside. Making a blog calendar is a great idea for making sure we don’t overdo it!
      Good luck ๐Ÿ˜€

Giselle, thank you so much for including me! I love how you laid this out and seeing everyone’s thoughts together is really powerful. I do really like Kayla’s two column approach.

Balance is such a good word! One that I think many of us could use.

This is such a great idea! I think this year, my word/phrase is “self-improvement”.

Last year, one of my friend’s called her year the Year of Adventure which is also a pretty fun theme to pursue daily. ๐Ÿ™‚

Self-improvement would be a great word of the year. I actually think it could work just like a year of adventure if you try to do something new to improve some area of your life everyday!
Good luck with your challenges this year btw! ๐Ÿ˜€

I love this post! I think it’s great to pick one word and let everything revolve around that word. It’s like your top priority statement all summed up. Our goals should always reflect and coincide with that statement. Balance is a great thing to have and I fear I won’t have it until my children are grown! Thanks for featuring me, doll!

      No problem Kayla!
Also, I don’t think anyone ever FULLY achieves balance – especially when they have kids! But I think just the act of trying to bring balance to your life can give you a little extra sanity along the way lol
