5 Tips for Making Healthy Eating a Lifestyle (not a diet)

21 January, 2015 by Giselle Rochford 71 Comments

Disclosure: I received a free copy of The Skinny Confidential: A Babe’s Sexy, Sassy Fitness and Lifestyle Guide in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

UPDATE: Giveaway closed

Hey Friends! How’s it goin?

So remember when I said I’ll be having two giveaways in honour of my blogiversary? Well day two is here! And if you missed day one, click through to check out all the awesome ‘New Year, New You’ goodies I’m giving away with the ladies of The Blogging Elite.

5 Tips for Making Healthy Eating a Lifestyle Change and not a diet from The Skinny Confidential's Lauryn Evarts via @ExSloth | ExSloth.com

Anyway, back to giveaway numero dos. This one is courtesy the amazing Lauryn Evarts of The Skinny Confidential. If you Google Lauryn’s name or her blog you’ll find that she’s a number one resource for healthy living advice for girls everywhere. In fact, when I started on this whole healthy living/blogging thing, TSCONF was one of the first blogs I checked out. So when I got the chance to review her book, The Skinny Confidential: A Babe’s Sexy, Sassy Fitness and Lifestyle Guide AND giveaway a free copy to one of y’all, of course I took it.

Lauryn’s book is choked full of advice to make healthy living feasible no matter your situation and she’s got lots of recipes, workouts and even hair and makeup tips in there too. But the section of the book I’m gonna share with you today is all about healthy eating and how to make it stick.

5 Tips to Make Healthy Eating a Lifestyle Change (not a fad)

1. Fake it till you make it

This one can really apply to everything in your life, but it definitely works for healthy heating. It’s all about your mindset. If you think that you’re gonna fail at eating healthy then you’re gonna fail. It’s as simple as that. So if you want to make this healthy eating thing a lifestyle change, then believe you can do it.

2. Don’t ignore your cravings

We all get cravings. I’m always craving cookies. Does that mean I eat cookies everyday? No. But when my cookie craving gets to be too much, I give into it. They may not be strictly healthy but I don’t totally ban cookies from my diet. Why? Because then it’ll truly be the only thing I want to eat. Any foods you restrict completely – unless for legit health reasons – have a way of taking over your brain. So, instead of restricting something and then binging on them in the dead of the night when we can’t take it anymore, how about we practice a little moderation. Everything in moderation is the key to eating healthy.

3. Know your facts

Yes, eating healthy foods are great but even too much of a good thing can be a bad thing. Portions are funny in that they can sneak up on you if you aren’t careful. If you’re eating a snack be sure to read the nutritional label so you know exactly what a portion is and don’t overdo it. The same goes for foods that you make at home. Check out the portion control chart below for some portion size tips.

6 Portion Control Tips from Lauryn Evarts of The Skinny Confidential via @ExSloth | ExSloth.com

4. Use portion controlled dishes

I thought this was a genius tip that I definitely need to look into a little more. Lauryn uses portion controlled dishes to help her eat the right quantities of different foods. If you’ve ever thought of weighing or measuring food but  you’re just too lazy to do it (or wash the extra dishes) this one is for you. Skip the middle man and get perfectly portioned bowls. Easy peasy.

5. Eat food you enjoy

This one didn’t come from Lauryn’s book but I figured I’d share it while I had ya here. In my opinion, it’s a lot easier to stick to healthy eating when you enjoy the foods that you eat. If you hate salads or don’t like green smoothies then you don’t have to eat them. You can only suffer through meals that you hate for so long before you get fed up, so set yourself up for success by eating healthy foods that actually taste good to you.

Nice post….I like the point i.e. USE PORTION CONTROLLED DISHES. We should have our meal as a mixed form of everything.

One more point I want to add – Savor Every Bite and Enjoy It

When eating a meal, try not to think about all the reasons you shouldn’t be eating it. Instead, learn to choose meals wisely from the start so that you can eat comfortably. Don’t rush through your food. Eat slowly and enjoy every bit of it. Not only is eating more pleasurable this way, but it also allows your body more time to signal to your brain when you’re full.

You have some great tips here for living a healthy life. It is important to live healthy, but not necessarily needful to go on a diet. Just being smart with what you eat and how you eat it is enough. I like how you said to not ignore cravings, ignoring cravings is hard.

Hi Giselle. Thanks for sharing this great tips. People today have somehow become accustomed to the thought that they need to eat large portions to feel filled. In fact, since 1960, the size of the average dinner plate has increased from 7-9 inches to 11-12 inches. So portion control is great start. Erin

According to me, a healthy lifestyle includes a good diet and exercise. These two things are essential for a healthy life. I implemented both of these things on my self and I get very effective results. I diet, don’t eat junk food. Try to consume that food which contains a high nutritional value and drink green coffee or green tea daily. This is my tip for a healthy lifestyle.

Try to get out of the house as often as possible when you are on a diet. It is important for your body to get fresh air, which will help to reduce stress and anxiety. Also, when you are out of the house, this will reduce your temptation to eat.

I must say that all the tips are very strong. Water aids weight loss by keeping your cells functioning at their fat-burning best, and also helps your kidneys flush out excess toxins and chemicals, which may be slowing down your metabolism. I don’t like setting a fixed daily amount for water drinking, as this will vary depending on your body size, activity level, etc. I think healthy living should be considered as an investment.
