Thought Catalogue: Consciousness of a New Runner

17 December, 2014 by Giselle Rochford 22 Comments

Hey Friends! How’s it goin?

It feels like it’s been a year and a half since I last wrote a post but it’s actually only been a week. Sometimes I find it so strange that I miss blogging so much when I take a break but I never even thought about doing it for the first 20 years of my life. Totally weird how we can fall in love with something we’d never thought we’d like.

But, on the flip side, our opinions on things can sometimes be totally on the mark. Take running for example: my father runs and he seems to love it. Me? Well, let’s just say that the ‘Ex’ in ExSloth is nowhere to be found when it comes to running.

Crazy thoughts of a new runner via @ExSloth | ExSloth.com

I’ve been a little lax with my workouts lately – a combination of being sick and having exams – and I was going through old posts for inspiration when I found this.

It’s from back in the Summer of 2013 when I decided to bite the bullet and go out for my first attempt at a run in like 4 years. I ran for all of 12 minutes and had to spend half that time convincing myself not to turn back. Even though I went on to run a couple 5Ks after this, I haven’t run since the middle of summer this year and I’m pretty much back where I started. So my thoughts would look something like this:

Disclaimer: Please do no judge me too harshly by my weirdness 😐

{START}

Whoo hoo here we go (starts jogging)

This isn’t so bad

[Insert expletive] It’s hot

“I’m a slaveeee for you…”

Did I just sing that out loud?

Wonder if anyone heard?…

Hmm…How do I cross at an intersection again?

Bee!!!! (Runs faster)

Phew, I lost it

Oh look, it’s a playground (slows down again)

Better speed up, don’t wanna look like a creeper

How long have I been running? (checks phone: 3 mins)

Yay! I beat my record!

I can sooo do this!

Why did I think this would be hard again?

I can go a little faster (speeds up)

Easy Peasy!

“It’s Britney [Insert Expletive]”

Why does this feel harder?

[Insert Expletive] I forgot this road goes uphill

I can make it!

Make it where?!?!!?

Oh crap, I didn’t choose an end point!

Okay just to the top of this hill

And then I’ll go back

Ahhhhh! Sweat in my eyes!…get it out! get it out!

That burned!

Ok motivation! motivation!

“Just keep running, just keep running”

That didn’t work…try something else

I do inclines on the treadmill all the time, this’ll be a piece of cake

IS THIS GETTING STEEPER?!?!?!

I’m never gonna make it

Stop it Giselle…you can do it!

No I can’t!

Yes you can!

Am I talking to myself?!?!

This run is sending me crazy

I’ll be a crazy running lady…no bags or cats necessary for my brand of insanity

Shut up Giselle!

Oh I can see the light!

There’s the top!

I can make it!

Si se puede!

Woah, that was a good movie…I wonder if it’s on Netflix?

Why am I not at the top yet!?!?

This is further away than I thought!

NEED WATER!

SO THIRSTY!

My throat is trying to kill me!

Is this how vampires feel??

I never want to be a vampire…perpetual thirst sucks!

Almost there!

10 more steps!

Breathe girl!

**In, Out, In, Out, In, Out, In, Out, In, Out**

FINALLY!! (drops to ground)

Now how am I gonna get home??…cuz I cant move!!

{END}

😆 Oh brilliant. I’ve been an on again, off again runner for a few years now, and while I can’t seem to fall in love with it, the itch to run never really seems to go away. I’ve been thinking about starting up again, so thank you for reminding me what’s in store 😛
