How to make this Galentine’s Day Epic AF

12 February, 2016 by Giselle Rochford 11 Comments

We all know that Sunday (February 14th) is Valentine’s Day, but there’s an arguably more important ‘holiday’ on February 13th. Galentine’s Day. Until a couple days ago, I had no idea what Galentine’s Day was. But, a few of my blogger friends mentioned it on Instagram and Twitter so, of course, I looked it up.

five essentials for an epic AF Galentine's Day a.k.a. Valentine's Day with your friends via @ExSloth | ExSloth.com

5 things to need to celebrate #GalentinesDay in style this year #valentines #ovariesoverbrovaries

Click To Tweet

If like me, you’re unfamiliar with what it is, Galentine’s Day is basically Valentine’s Day for you and your gal pals and came about thanks to Lesley Knope of Parks and Recreations. I’m usually not one for TV shows because I can’t handle the suspense of waiting days on end to find out what happens next. But Leslie Knope sounds like a cross between my spirit animal and a sister from another mister, so I may have to make an exception for Parks and Rec.

Anyway, once I realised what it was, I immediately wanted to plan my own Galentine’s Day celebration. Unfortunately, most of my girlfriends don’t actually live in this city, so that was a bust. Instead, I decided to share all the things I thought one would need for the perfect Galentine’s Day celebration in hopes that some of you lovely ladies could make good use of it.

5 Things you need for the Perfect Galentine’s Day

1. Eats

You know me. Obviously, the number one thing on my mind is going to be food. The official Galentine’s Day meal includes all the waffles, but I don’t have a waffle maker, so the next best thing is a stack of these Red Velvet Beet Pancakes and/or any/all of these:

  • Vegan Red Velvet Shortbread Cookies
  • Vegan Chocolate Bark
  • All of these

2. Wine

I always like to have a bottle of wine handy when I’m with my girls or, let’s be honest, by myself. Admittedly, I know almost nothing about wine and still buy ones with the highest alcohol percentage to cost ratio, so it’s hardly ever anything fancy. But the most hilarious conversations and antics ensue when there’s wine involved, so be sure to have some handy for your Galentine’s Day celebrations.

3. Spa Day Stuff

No girls’ day is complete without a trip to the spa, or so I’m told. But, I’m a recent grad, with a mountain of debt so a trip to an actual spa is out for me. Luckily, at home spa days are actually pretty easy to do. Even Lauren Conrad does them.

p.s. here are some spa day DIYs for those of you who also can’t drop a whack on brand name cosmetics:

  • Coconut Oil Night Cream
  • and all of these face masks

4. Movies and/or Music

No gathering is complete without some sort of entertainment. Other than that provided by the wine induced shenanigans, of course. Now, the usual Valentine’s Day movies and music tend to be sappy AF and are really not appropriate for Galentine’s Day. What you want are (mostly) non-romantic movies with badass female leads. Think Resident Evil, Erin Brokovich, Stick It, Tomb Raider, Underworld, G.I. Jane, Million Dollar Baby etc.

I’ve also compiled a Spotify Playlist to get you started on the music side of things. You’re welcome.

5. Gifts

And this is where Galentine’s Day differs from any other day you usually hang out with your girls. The gifts. I have to admit, this is really what sold me on this little holiday and why I plan to celebrate it for many, many, many years to come. Because Galentine’s Day has its own merch. Sure, you can get sentimental and meaningful gifts for each other, but who doesn’t need these in their lives?

‘Ovaries before brovaries’ spoon
‘Ovaries before brovaries’ tote
‘Fries before guys’ tank

Again, you’re welcome.

What about you?

  • Do you plan to celebrate Galentine’s Day this year?
  • If you are, how?
  • Did I miss any Galentine’s Day essentials?

Good idea! My friends and I did this for St. Patrick’s Day last year. I’m sure it’ll be fun for Galentine’s as well 😀

LOVE Parks & Rec and Galentine’s Day! Lucky for me, I was hit with the winter plague, so my only Galentine was HGTV and all the green tea.

Who doesn’t like receiving gifts 🙂 You can put together a small box with all sorts of personalized things, here they are made cool https://www.personalisegiftsuk.co.uk/. This can be a box with Slippers, candles and pillows, such a home set. And perhaps even a hoodie, as you wish!
